Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret Probasco Kendall, age 103, of New Egypt and previously of Cream Ridge, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at The Pines at Whiting, in New Jersey. She was born in Cream Ridge on March 4, 1915 to the late William Vanderveer and Genevieve Wilbur Probasco.
Having been promoted twice in school, Margaret graduated from high school at the age of 15 and later that year enrolled in art school, after not being old enough to go to nursing school. She fell in love with painting at a young age and continued arts and crafts throughout her lifetime. Margaret was very talented in many aspects and particularly enjoyed crafting and music-making. When her daughters were young, she would often make their outfits and sew doll clothing. She also had an interest in both crocheting and needlepoint. Margaret enjoyed playing the piano, the sovox, and sang in several choirs.
She was an active member of the Hornerstown Baptist Church and then later at the Allentown Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer. Margaret also sang in both choirs as well as in the Fort Dix Choir. She worked as a bookkeeper for Reiphoff Saw Mill in Allentown, New Jersey until deciding to retire at the age of 80. She also volunteered at the Red Cross and several Hospitals in the area, as her love for nursing and the medical field always kept her interest. In her later years, after retirement, Margaret would try to keep herself busy. She would stay mentally sharp by doing crossword puzzles, playing games including cards games and chess. She was also an avid reader, often reading three books a week. Her reading interests included books focused on medicine, westerns, mysteries, and crimes. Margaret took great pride in doing for others. She spent many of her senior years hand-making hundreds of crochet lap robes for people in nursing homes and children in hospitals. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and dear friend who will be deeply missed.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents William and Genevieve Probasco, her brothers Milton Vanderveer Probasco and William Hendrickson Probasco , and her sister Dorothy Probasco Barclay.
She leaves behind her two daughters, Bonnie Roman and her husband Ron of New Egypt, NJ and Kathi Katz and her husband William of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren, Jennifer Sengin, Matthew Sengin, Stephen Roman, Christine Helmlinger, David Roman and Cara Roman; her two great-grandchildren Michael and Michelle; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
