Brinberg, Edward George - 99, of Ventnor, NJ, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2024 with family by his side. Eddie was born in NYC on April 30, 1924.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia, “Tippi” Brinberg (Weiss), parents, Irving and Madeline Brinberg, and older sister, Dorothy Arnold. Eddie grew up in Washington Heights, Manhattan with a zest for action. He could be found in J. Hood Wright Park playing ball or the streets of NYC speeding on skates, playing roller hockey with his neighborhood “Rangers”. His parents would have to pull him by the ear, dragging him home, when the street lights came on. An avid athlete, winning the NYC - Fast pitch softball championship in his High School years, while simultaneously excelling at chess, backgammon and billiards. Ed was a music lover, listening to Russian composers, big bands and he could “swing” with the best of them!
In December 1941, Ed enlisted in the Army and went off to WWII where he fought in the Normandy Invasion and the Philippines. He served aboard the USS Ancon on Omaha Beach as PFC communications officer as part of the US Air Corp, attached to the Navy. Upon returning home he met Sylvia “Tippi” Weiss, swept her off her feet, and married her on November 27, 1948. They shared almost 74 years of married life together.
Ed went on to become manager of the Lenox Hotel, located in Times Square, NYC, owned by his father and uncle. As the couple grew into a family of 5, they moved out to Plainview, Long Island. On weekends one would find Eddie enjoying his time landscaping his home & sharing his love for athletics, music and backyard games with his three children. Ed and Tippi were the life of the neighborhood, as all of the neighbors would frequently drop in on the Brinbergs. During these years Ed & Tippi would host costume parties, Thanksgivings and family Passover Seders. In the 1970’s Ed went into the Dry-Cleaning business where he owned and operated his own store in Manhasset, Long Island, until he retired.
In 1985, Ed and Tippi moved to Leisure Village West, in Lakehurst, NJ to be closer to their grandchildren. Here, Ed made his mark on the tennis courts, keeping him fit and trim until almost 90. many could also find him in the pool or at the card club schooling the guys in pinochle and winning at bridge. As her “sidekick,” Tippi enlisted an eager Eddie to renew his amateur Catskills career by acting and singing on stage. They performed for countless audiences, receiving applause and standing ovations from their community at LVW.
His grandchildren loved to visit him in Leisure Village and were included in family trips to Myrtle Beach, SC each year.
