Frances M. Uncle, age 100, of Browns Mill died Saturday, December 25 at Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mt. Holly. Born in New Lisbon, she was a lifetime area resident. Frances was born in 1910 to Abram and Bessie (Haines) Brown and when she was young lived in a boarding house in Browns Mills until she was about 11 years old. Her father lost both parents at a young age and lived with a farmer as did his sister and brother. He owned several large businesses without ever having the chance to go to school. During the depression her father would buy express wagons and other things and give them to area children at Christmas and was always helping people. Frances? mother worked at JJ White in the kitchen and it was there where they first met. When she lived in New Lisbon, Frances went to school at a one-room school and later by train to school in Pemberton. When they moved to Browns Mills at age 11, she went to school at the new school that was built. Her brother Percy, heard an ad on the radio about starting a silver fox ranch, and he and her father started a fox ranch on their large property. The foxes were fed a special diet and their pelts were sold in New York. After Frances graduated from Pemberton High School she worked for Mary Felton, who owned the Pig ?n Whistle as her secretary. Later she worked for Ralph Hulick in the Post Office. During her time at the Post Office, she was interviewed by the F.B.I. about a suspicious letter she saw being mailed to Charles Lindbergh when his baby was kidnapped. During these years in Browns Mills, many plays, dances and minstrel shows were held in the auditorium and Frances played the piano there and also for the silent movies that were held once a week. She also gave piano lessons to many students for a number of years. Frances also started Girl Scouts in Browns Mills with Vie Smith so her daughters could belong. Frances was married to Francis Uncle in 1933 and lived in Asbury Park for a year before they moved back to Browns Mills and built her current house in 1934. Frances has been a member of the Browns Mills United Methodist Church since 1923 and has played for services in church every Sunday and during the week for choir practice and other church functions for over 60 years. Frances was predeceased by her husband, Francis Uncle; her brother, Percy Brown and by her parents, Abram and Bessie (Haines) Brown. She is survived by three daughters, Connie Mahler and husband Bill of Browns Mills, Judy Rinaldi of Browns Mills and Nancy Caine and husband Eric of Rochester, NY; eight grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. Funeral services for Frances will be held on Sunday, January 2 at 3:00 PM at the Browns Mills United Methodist Church, 2 Pemberton-Browns Mills Road in Browns Mills with Pastor Dick Esher, officiating. Calling hours will be from 2:00 to 3:00 PM at the church. Burial will be in the Browns Mills Methodist Cemetery.
