BERTHA MARY KERNER Manager Fort Dix Federal Credit Union Bertha Mary Kerner, the beloved wife of predeceased CSM John E. Kerner died Tuesday October 30th, 2012, two weeks after celebrating her 90th birthday. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1922, Bertha was the last surviving member of the 13 sibling Snyder and Witmyer family. Mrs. Kerner began her financial career in 1962 as a teller at the Fort Dix Federal Credit Union. Forty-seven years later, she retired as manager, a job that was her passion. Prior to that, Bertha worked as a dental assistant upon arriving at Fort Dix. During her husband John’s 33 years of Army service, Bert and John were posted from Fort Eustis and Fort Monroe, VA; to Brockton, MA; to Ft. Kobbe in the Panama Canal Zone; to Offutt Air Force Base, NE. Their next assignment was Ft. Dix, NJ where John served as the Post Sergeant Major. A brief stay at Fort Monmouth was followed by John’s retirement as Command Sergeant Major at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. The couple then settled in Mt. Holly. Bert lost her life long love when John died in 2002. Bertha was a member of the Ft. Dix Non-Commissioned Officer’s Ladies Club and the Orchid Chapter of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Kerner is survived by daughters Nancy Stewart and son-in-law Dale Stewart Sr. of Townville, SC; Debra Kerner of Westampton, NJ; Janet Sperling and predeceased son-in-law Brian Sperling of Wrightstown, NJ. Grandchildren Dale Stewart Jr. and wife Stacey of Mt. Laurel, NJ; Susan Stewart and husband Bill of Townville, SC; Katelyn Sperling of Wrightstown, NJ. Great-grandchildren Amanda Stewart of Seattle, WA and Lauren Stewart of Maple Shade, NJ. She is also survived by Lisa (Grimm) Tuliano and her son Kyle Tuliano of Mt. Holly, NJ who shared a long and loving bond with the Kerner family. This relationship grew to include Lisa and Dominic’s family as well as Kyle and Katrina’s family. Viewing calling hours are scheduled for 2-4, followed by a service at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 10th at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533 (www.tilghmanfh.com). Burial will be on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in memory of Mrs. Kerner can be made to the Salvation Army, the Fisher House Foundation, or the American Indian College Fund.
