Obituary of H. Rita deVries

Hertha Rita deVries (nee Beck), age 81, passed away peacefully after a long illness on February 2, 2013 at Care One Nursing Home in Jackson, NJ. She was born on February 25, 1931 and was raised in Newark, NJ. Rita also resided in Sayreville, NJ before moving to Jacobstown, NJ in 1985. Rita was a graduate of St. Rose of Lima Elementary School and Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Newark, NJ. . She was predeceased by her husband Gerrit L. deVries. She was also predeceased by her parents Myles and Hertha (nee Raab) Beck, brothers Frank and Leonard Beck and sister’s Theresa Beck and Mary Ann Beck Yanas Koester. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law John Donald. Rita is survived by a daughter Catherine Donald; three grandchildren, Alexis and husband Jason Dove, Joseph Donald and Angela Donald; and two great granddaughters, Anna Marie and Anastasia Dove, all of Covington, GA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Robert Hardy of New Egypt, NJ and Veronica and Harold Mastenbrook of Whiting, NJ and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Care One at Jackson for the excellent care given to Rita, with special thanks to Abbey, Donna, Angel, and Nancy. Thanks also to Vitas Hospice for the personal care given to Rita. Thank you to Robin and Tavia. Rita was member of the Church of the Assumption where she served as a Eucharistic Minister until her illness. She was a member of the Jim Dandy’s Square Dance Club. Rita was the Deputy Tax Collector for Plumsted Township until her retirement in 1998. She was an accomplished seamstress. She was known most notably for her square dance costumes. She left her family members a legacy of Afghans that she crocheted for each of them. Funeral Services will be private. Burial will be in the BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery in North Hanover Township, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made in Rita’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Vitas Hospice, One Meridian Rd., Eatontown, NJ 07724.
